Why is Coconut Water Good For You?

Coconut water is better at replacing lost body fluids than a sports drink or water, but that depends on whether or not you like the taste. Most athletes prefer the taste of  sports drinks over coconut water according to Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Coconut water is much more than a sports drink, it offers medicinal and health benefits. Modern medical science is now confirming the use of coconut in treating many health conditions, and published studies in medical journals show that the coconut, in one form or another, may provide a wide range of health benefits.

It is low in calories, contains no fat or cholesterol
According to a 2012 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, coconut water has cardioprotective benefits as it is fat-free and contains no cholesterol. It helps lower LDL the ‘bad’ cholesterol and increase HDL which is the ‘good’ cholesterol levels, overall reducing the risk of heart disease. Coconut water also contains antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-platelet properties that help reduce plaque formation in the arteries and lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Regulates blood sugar
Coconut water contains amino acids, dietary fiber, vitamin C and protein that helps regulate blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity, improve blood circulation and the heart rate. Coconut water also helps to manage the common health issues faced by people that are diabetic. It helps manage weight, improve circulation, reduce symptoms like numbness in feet and atherosclerosis.

A 2012 study published in the Journal Food and Function studied the therapeutic effects of mature coconut water and found that it helped decrease blood glucose levels and oxidative stress.

Controls acidity
Diets that are high in acid-producing foods, like processed and fast foods,  contribute to acidic pH levels that cause low energy, including stress and toxic load; all of which reduces the body’s ability to absorb vitamins and minerals. Acidic pH levels contribute to problems like stressed liver function, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure and immune deficiency.

Coconut water is said to regulate the balance the body’s system. It has an alkalizing effect that helps restore healthy pH levels in the body. It helps to alkalize the acidic pH levels to prevent indigestion, constipation, and heartburn. Coconut water is a great and natural way to prevent acid reflux. The pH of coconut water is isotonic with our blood and it can be used as a plasma substitute in extreme emergencies.
